Walking Street: The Next Generation

Where do they all come from?  How do they end up in Bangkok or Pattaya?  There are many stories.  Some are forcibly abducted at a very early age (although now this is now rare) but most, make a choice and take on a new "job" with the pressure of poor economics as their primary incentive.

There are some common factors in most of their backgrounds that form a trend.  I'm going to take some guesses here based on what I know and what the girls have been telling me.

Here is a classic example of a girl who could be possibility on the edge of leaving her home town at going to Pattaya.   She has all the ear markings of a bar girl in the making.   We'll call her Noi.  This is Noi and her mother.   I first noticed Noi about 10 months ago selling at the local night market.   She moved from that job to a local ice cream shop for 6 months and now for past month or so has been working with Mom selling cut fruit at a day market.   Noi has a beautiful little boy about 1 year old and is permanently separated from the boy's father.

When I visit Noi's mother and friends make a little fuss about me.   It's almost like they are pushing her to take notice of me.  A few weeks back I heard the Mother say in a light hearted voice "Chock Dee Ma".   This literally means "Good Luck has arrived".    So, already, the mother is sending waves of suggesting to her daughter.

Noi tends to be quiet when I visit.   She is trying to figure out what I'm up to when I'm paying her attention.  She smiles at me, she flirts with me a little bit.  She is guarded but curious.

Mother, daughter and a few friends peal and cut fruits for sale at a local day market.  One of the items that are popular is sour mango.  They sell that product for 10 or 20 baht a small bag.  That is between 25 and 50 cents USD.   I would be surprised if they in total take in more than $10 USD a day.
Noi has a habit of hitting me up for ice cream.  She'll buy for family and friends at my expense.   I laugh about it.  Last week alone she hit up on 3 different days.  She's is not shy about it and she looks at me sideways as she pockets the change.  I'm not taking it very seriously at this point.   The most expensive purchase was about $1.50 USD.   Part of the Thai way here would suggest if her requests would increase to really substantive items, she may be inviting me to get involved with her.  In Thailand, relationships tends to be very practical.  Exchanges are typically designed to be mutually benefitial.

Noi doesn't wear any make up (probably doesn't have the money to buy it).   Still, she is a beautiful girl, she has a great figure which is not really seen in these photos.

Without a doubt she would make great money and have offers of travel and relationships if she went to work in Pattaya.

She tells me that her older sister already works in Pattaya.  That sister supposedly works at a larger up scale hotel.  I believe the sister is there but if she works at a hotel is anyone's guess.  Normally in your home town, the family will not admit if a girl is working in the sex industry (sometimes they don't even know).

Will she go?   It is quite possible that Noi doesn't want to leave her young son behind in the care of others.   Still, if next week she is mysteriously missing, I won't be surprised.  This is part of normal life up-country in Thailand.

OH - I forget to tell you.   Noi is only 19 years old.

Galt on the Megaphone: Attention Local Campers!

For those of you at your computers back in the west, please don't believe me just because I say it's true.  I strongly suggest you come here to see Thailand for yourself.

I'm on a special mission this weekend.  I should have some really great material for you next week.
